We need more women in local leadership, here’s how to get involved
Don’t Just Get Mad, Do Something!
It’s time for Cape women to get involved in local government.
As this chart clearly demonstrates, the ratio of women to men serving on local boards, committees, and commissions is out of balance. Women’s perspectives and voices need to be a part of the decision making that determines our quality of life on Cape Cod today and in future.
In 2015 and 2016, women made up slightly more than a quarter of the chief executive and policy making bodies of Cape Cod towns. Twenty-two of 83 (27 percent) town councilors and selectmen were women.
However, in 2016, two towns – Bourne and Orleans — had no women on their select boards. In general, planning boards and zoning boards of appeals had even lower total numbers of women (22 percent and 12 percent, respectively). Bourne and Eastham have no women on their planning boards, but, in Dennis and Brewster, women are majorities on the planning boards. In 2014, the number of women on planning boards and finance committees was slightly higher than in 2015 and 1016. Housing committees continue to have the highest numbers of female members.
Join a board, committee or commission because you want to make a difference!

Special Meeting for Cape Women Considering Running for Local Office
DUE TO A SCHEDULING CONFLICT THIS GATHERING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED. THE EVENT WILL NOW BE HELD:
February 25 at 8 – 10 am
at the Optimist Cafe in Yarmouth Port,
134 Rt. 6a, (just East of Willow St.)
Yarmouth Port, MA (link to map)
This gives us the opportunity to reach out to more women on the Cape. Help us spread the word! Do you know a woman who is considering running for office?
This is a special meeting for women on Cape Cod who are seriously considering campaigning for local office. This small gathering will provide a more focused discussion about what is involved in a local election. This is a great opportunity for experienced advice. Interested women must RSVP, details below.
SPECIAL EVENT FOR CAPE COD WOMEN INTERESTED IN RUNNING FOR LOCAL OFFICE
- Are you considering running for public office in your community?
- Do you have questions or concerns?
- Would you like to join a small group discussion with State Rep. Sarah Peake?
- Come talk to Sarah who has run for multiple elected offices and hear her advice on how to handle a campaign.
In keeping with the mission of the Cape Women’s Coalition “to encourage and support women to enter public life and become leaders through civic engagement,” we have arranged a small-group discussion lead by Sarah Peake who has run for and served both in local and state offices. If you are considering taking this step or have decided you will run, please join us.
Deadlines for “pulling papers” to run in most Cape Cod towns are coming up and we want to help local women who are truly interested in running for office to serve their local community.
RSVP a must. Please Contact Linda at (617) 620-2157 or maccebula1@verizon.net to RSVP or with any questions.
